The modern state of Haryana was formed in 1966 after a long-term tussle between the Punjabi-speaking and Hindi-speaking areas of the Indian state of Punjab. The city Chandigarh also serves as the capital of Haryana since then. As in almost all of the Plains, Hindi is the mother tongue of Haryana, although pockets of Punjabi speakers are also found, mostly around Chandigarh.
